Subject: Good Recording, Performance Cut Short
A decent recording of a shortened show. The set starts out with solid performances of all of the standard opening songs. Billy's banter to the audience regarding how the band viewed Cleveland as feeling similar to playing in Chicago goes over well and sets up an expectation for this gig to end up being a good one. However, there is wear in Billy's voice, and tiredness sets in as the show progresses. The set ends up excluding Bodies, and more noticeably excludes the 20+ minute version of Silverfuck that was the standard show-closer. Prior to Mayonaise (which ends up being the last song of the night), Billy asks the crowd whether they are still out there. But, although it's easy to blame the shortened set on an unresponsive audience, it's also not a stretch to assume that by the end of the show the audience was simply beginning to react to the band's tiredness.
It's also worth noting that subsequent "second night" shows on the June/July tour, such as Philadelphia (7/6) and Landover (7/10), would also feature shorter setlists than the show performed the night before them, as well as have Corgan in weaker voice and the band playing with lower energy overall. This show in Cleveland on 7/3 followed the excellent gig in Buffalo on 7/2. So, even with the possibility of a quieter audience in Cleveland, it's also just as likely that by this point in the year that the band just couldn't keep up the intensity of playing their long set to the large arena crowds on back-to-back nights.
